Westleton Barrel Fair 2015
4th September 2015
The 21st Westleton Barrel Fair took place on Sunday 16th August on the village Green and our team here at The Westleton Crown once again was delighted to take part. It is a family day out with live music, Morris dancers, food, drink and craft stalls and this year we also were very fortunate to have a sunny day that everyone enjoyed.
The first Westleton Barrel Fair was held back in 1951 and organised by two locals Charlie Alexander and Jim Fisk.
Every year the event starts at midday with a barrel rolling race between the two pubs in the village - The Westleton Crown and The White Horse.
This has always been a team affair where each pub put forward a team of three men to compete against each other. Wooden barrels have been replaced with iron kegs long time ago, which means that those racing need to be not just physically strong but also have skills. Our team of three, Chris, Nick and Rob, beat The White Horse team after a fierce but friendly race rolling barrels with a stick down the green and then back up. The Westleton Crown’s team brought the trophy back to the inn after a three year break and we now proudly display it in our cosy bar.
It was great to meet a lot of people, locals and those who travelled from further away, and came to sample a range of local beers, ciders and soft drinks available from out stall as well as very popular BBQ.
We also had a prize draw where one lucky Barrel Fair goer had a chance to win a meal for two people in our restaurant at The Westleton Crown. Congratulations to Fayre Hickey-Martin that was selected at random as a winner!
The next Barrel Fair is on Sunday 21st August 2016 and we hope to see you all there!
