Reviews - Great Little Adventures

A traditional coaching inn which has recently enjoyed a stylish make-over and been named the County Dining Pub of the Year, the Westleton Crown is set in a picturesque Suffolk village, a few miles from the famous coastal towns of Dunwich, Aldeburgh and Southwold.

The hotel offers a warm and friendly welcome, in very comfortable yet undeniably chic surroundings. Stripped wooden floors and muted colours ensure a calm backdrop, softened by the crackle of open log fires, and the presence of plenty of cosy corners, perfect for hiding away with the day’s papers and a mug of fresh coffee.

Comfort is a high priority in the bedrooms, which are all individually decorated in neutral shades, with luxurious Egyptian bed linen, plump pillows and duck down duvets. The en suite bath and shower rooms have Fired Earth fittings, heated mirrors and towel rails and many have enormous roll top baths, big enough for two and monsoon showers. Rooms are named after birds found on the nearby RSPB nature reserve, and each room features an original canvas of its namesake.

Food is a big attraction at the Westleton Crown, and Head Chef Mark prepares a wide-ranging menu, from the Crown’s Own Cod and Chips to Schezuan Glazed Duck Breast with Spring Onion Potato Rosti. Breakfast is also quite an event. Choose from an array of cooked options, from full English, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs to name but a few. Or go continental with fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals and pastries, all beautifully presented, freshly prepared and quite delicious. Take breakfast in the light and airy conservatory with views of the garden, or for those lazy mornings, you can have breakfast delivered to your room, with the newspapers.

In warmer weather, the conservatory is a lovely spot to enjoy a drink or a meal, as is the beautiful enclosed terraced garden, where little ones can play safely on the lawn at the top, whilst parents relax nearby.

Venturing out, the younger members of the party will enjoy a trip to the village green to feed the ducks on the pond, whilst parents might like to browse the incredible selection of rare books for sale in the old chapel.

The Westleton Crown is aimed primarily at the adult end of the market, but is nevertheless a good choice for families looking for a stylish break. Younger guests are made to feel very much at home, and high chairs, booster seats, cots and children’s meals are all provided.
