RSPB MINSMERE

The Westleton Crown is the perfect base to explore the Suffolk countryside and coast. Whether visiting for the scenery, the wildlife, or the fantastic food and drink scene, there is something for everyone.

Get close to nature at RSPB Minsmere and discover the Suffolk coast at its prime. The unique coastal reserve is perfect for both idyllic walks to stretch the legs and soak in the fresh air, or spending a whole weekend immersed in the beautiful wildlife, enjoying picture-perfect moments that will last a lifetime.

Choose from a selection of walks that takes you through a variety of different habitats, crossing gorgeous wetland and picturesque heaths, noticing some of the UK’s rarest wildlife along the way. Discover the Woodland Trail on a search for bluebells in the spring and White Admiral and Purple Hairstreak butterflies in the summer, and glance across the grasses towards the wetlands to catch a glimpse of the marsh harriers sky dancing in April and May. You may even be lucky enough to spot a mischievous otter bathing beneath the vast open skies.

Pause at the Island Mere hide to look out for the southern marsh orchids flowering along the trail and enjoy walking along to the soundtrack of the singing nightingales during the spring months. In autumn, tread delicately through the blaze of colour that carpets the grassland, looking out for the red deer stags peeking through the tall reeds.

Venture closer to the waters’ edge on the Coast Trail where migrant birds such as the curlew sandpiper come to refuel as the autumn turns to winter. Skirt the Konik field and count the Konik Polski ponies and highland cattle, before meandering along the unique shingled beach, admiring the scarce shingle flowers on route.

RSPB Minsmere is perfect for families or groups looking to learn about their new surroundings.

The Wild Zone is ideal for those visiting with children; with dens to be built and mini beasts to be spotted, there’s plenty to keep the little ones entertained! Do be aware though, that because of the sensitive habitats, dogs are not permitted at RSPB Minsmere. There are plenty of other walks in the area where your four-legged friends are welcome so please get in touch with our team if you’d like more information.

Guests can discover the wonder of birds during the Birds for Beginners workshop or witness the thousands of starlings gather in their swirling flocks on the guided Sunset Stroll. Whatever the occasion, RSPB Minsmere is the ideal location to reconnect with nature and spend quality time in the great outdoors.

Make your visit to Minsmere extra special with a unique 4x4 wildlife safari and discover the secrets and hidden history embedded into the stunning landscape.
